Overview

Discover the pristine Barun valley and the fifth highest mount Makalu 8463m on a three-week trek to Makalu base camp 4870m. Makalu Base Camp trek offers magnificent views of Mt. Makalu, Chamlan(7319m), Baruntse (7129m), and Mera Peak (6654m). The trekking trail passes through 46 Km long Barun valley which inhabits the last remaining pristine forests and alpine meadows. As you trek along Seeduwa and Tashi Gaon while gazing at the stunning landscapes your guide will brief you with interesting details about the region. You will acclimatize for a day in Khongma Danda and cross Shipton La before entering the Barun valley.
Barun valley treasures the last remaining pristine forest and alpine meadows. Makalu Barun conservation area is home to Snow leopard (Uncia uncia), Musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster), and Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetarus). Bird species symbolic to the Park are the Spiny babbler, Impeyan pheasant, Rufous-throated wren babbler, and Slety-bellied Tesia. Camping trek along this 46 Km long valley through Yangle Kharka and Langmale Kharka you will discover nature at its supreme state. Ultimately you will get to Makalu Base Camp 4870m from where you will get the bold south face of mount Makalu, Everest, and Lhotse. Later this day you will explore the surrounding glacier, lakes, and ice sheets, and your guide will tell you interesting details about their formation. You will trek back following the same trail to Num and fly out to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft)

You arrive at Tribhuwan International Airport. Glacier Nepal treks representative welcomes you at the airport and takes you to the hotel by privet vehicle. After a short rest, You will meet the guide at our office. you may have some questions about trekking he will give you an answer to the question. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2 : Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Exploring Kathmandu Sightseeing Points – Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa & Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square. evening some paperwork and your trekking guide will check your gear and outfit.

Day 3 : Fly to Tumlingtar then trek to Chichila Bazar (1,980m/6,497ft)

Fly to Tumlingtar in the morning Trek to Khadibari distirct deaquarters of Sankhuwasabha, asent to Naya Bazar the Makalu-Barun project office.Bhotebas you can see the spectacular view of Chhamang (7319m), and Jaljale (5333m). After the showing TIMS and Permit trek to Gurung village Chichila Bazaar.

Day 4 : Chichila Bazar to Num (1,560m/5,119ft) : 6-7 hours

Trek to the ridge in the open forest past some small Sherpa settlements and get down to the mani walls at Sakurati Majuwa. the trail continues to climb through the ridge to reach Mure, From Mure, the trail begins a tedious descent to Num just beside the Arun river, you will have a good view of the valley. Overnight at Num 

Day 5 : Num to Seduwa (1,540m/5,052ft) : 6-7 hours

Trek to Seduwa follows the clean path north along the ridge, then drop steeply down to Lumbang. final down to Arun river crossing a Suspension bridge. Now you must climb about 1000m, after some time you will reach Sedua. The entry checkpoint for Makalu-Barun National Park. overnight at Sudea

Day 6 : Seduwa to Tashigaon (2,100m/6,890ft) : 4-5 hours

After breakfast, passing a Sedua climb gently northwards through paddy-field to the village Manigaon. you can see far behind Num, from here you turn west and gradually up to the Chyaksadanda village. after crossing the school and field to reach Tashigaon. overnight at Tashigaon.

Day 7 : Tashigaon to Khongma Danda (3,560m/11,680ft) : 6-7 hours

Starting from the Tashigaon to Khongma danda is climbed a very steep trail and around 1400m ascent. If this is the first time you are more than 3500 meters above sea level you may get signs of altitude sickness, be alert for the symptoms. From Khongma you can see Mt. Kanchenjunga far to the east. overnight at Khongma.

Day 8 : Acclimatization day

We have a rest day at Khonma Danda, for acclimatiza our body before go 4000m and more. we climb the ridge above Khongma for a destant view towards Mt. Kanchenjunga ( 8586m/28169ft. 3rd highest mountain in the world ) far to the east .Overnight at Khongma Danda.

Day 9 : Khongma to Mumbuk (3,930m/12,893ft) : 6-7 hours

After breakfast, we walk from Khongma, climb the ridge on steep to a Chorten and view of some mountain. as you climb a stone staircase over the ridge toward to small pass known as Tutu la (4050m/13,287ft). Walk down to Kala Pokhari then climb up to Shipton La (4,216m/13,832ft) named after Eric Shipton. trek another few hours to reach Mumbuk. Overnight at Mumbuk.

Day 10 : Mumbuk to Yangle Kharka (3,557m/11,670ft) : 6-7 hours

After breakfast, we walk down steeply down to Barun Valley, which forms a natural trail toward our destination. the trail crosses the Barun river on a wooden bridge and rises to a lone teashop at Yangle Kharka. Overnight at Yangla Kharka.

Day 11 : Yangle Kharka to Merek (4,570m/14,993ft) : 4-5 hours

We start our trek after breakfast, we climb gently to Nghe Kharka. The landscape here could be something from the rocky mountain and the snowline seems very close to touching. we crossed during the walk Riphuk Kharka, Jhak Kharka, Yak Kharka, and the final climb to the Merek. Overnight at Merek.

Day 12 : Merek to Shersong (4,660m/15,288ft) : 2 hours

After breakfast, Today is a short day for a walk to reach Shersong. it helps us to acclimatize our body before climbing base camp. the trail turns north and treks through the valley. Finally, we can see Mt. Makalu, another hour to Shersong. we can hike around to kill the time. Overnight at Shersong.


Day 13 : Explore Makalu Base Camp (4,870m/15,977ft) 4-5 hrs

After breakfast, we hike and explore Makalu Base Camp. we walk beside the Barun Glacier. we hike for up to (5,250m/17,224ft) the viewpoint, from this viewpoint we can see Mt. Lhotse, Lhotse Shar, and Everest on the northwest side. After spending some time at a Base camp return to Sherson. overnight at Sherson.

Day 14 : Sherson to Yangle Kharka (3,600m/11,811ft): 5-6 hours

After breakfast retraces your steps down the Barun valley, 1100m descent enjoying the view reach to the Yangle Kharka. overnight at Yangle Kharka.

Day 15 : Yangle Kharka to Mumbuk (3,550m/11,646ft) : 4-5 hours

After breakfast continues descending through the rockfall and climbing up arrive to at Mumbuk. 520m descent 400m ascent. overnight at Mumbuk.

Day 16 : Mumbuk to Khongma Danda (3,560/11,680ft) : 5-6 hours

After breakfast trek through Shipton la (4216m/13,832ft), and all the way descend to Khongma Danda. Overnight at Khongma.

Day 17 : Khongma to Tashi Gaon (2,100m/6,890ft) : 4-5 hours

After  Breakfast trek, all the way down to Tashigaon 1260m descend, overnight at Tashigaon. overnight at Tashigaon.

Day 18 : Tashigaon to Num(1,560m/5,118ft) : 6-7 hours

After breakfast heading down to Num 1500m down / 900m up. A long day stays overnight at Num.

Day 19 : Num to Chichila (1,960m/5,119ft) : 5-6 hours

Trek back to Chichila, it's the same way down takes around 6 hours. overnight at Chichila.

Day 20 : Chichila to Tumlingtar (518m/1,700ft) : 6-7 hours

After breakfast trek back to Tumlingtar via Khadbari .overnight at Tumlingtar. 

Day 21 : Fly from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

After having breakfast, fly back to Kathmandu. Take you to the hotel. you can visit around Thamel for shopping.  We have a farewell dinner in a traditional Nepalese restaurant with cultural dance. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 22 : Final Departure

This is your final day in Nepal. Glacier Nepal treks representative will drop you at Tribhuwan international airport by privet vehicle. Home sweet home.
