Introduction

The trek to Phoksumdo Lake has been made much more practical since the construction of a new trail the suil Gad from its confluence with the Thulo Bheri. There are not a lot of camp sites and there are lodges only in Chekpa,Jharana hotel and Ringmo but the trek has some lovely forest sections, phoksumdo Lake is dramatic and region contains a tiny pocket of the unusual Bon-po culture. The Lake is within shey Phoksumdo National park which was established in 1981. The national park literature uses the spelling Phoksundo but local informants believe the correct transliteration is Phok, sum(three), do (stones), relating to the three arms of the lake .The park is said to abound in wildlife, although the most spectacular inhabitants snow leopards and herds of blue sheep are found primarily in the northern restricted regions of the park near Shey gompa. The lake and trail are snowbound from mid-November to mid-May. Almost all the inhabitants of Ringmo village move to lower elevations at this time.
