Introduction

Helambu, about 75 km north of kathmandu ,is an area inhabited by Sherpas. You can include Helambu in a langtang trek ,either via Gosaikund. There are two versions of the Helambu trek. The popular loop trek starts from the edge of the Kathmandu valley at sandarijal ,climbs over the shivapuri ridge and drops to Talamarang .It then climbs to Tarke Gyang and back down ridge through Sermathang to the road Malemchi pul bazaar. The longer route via Tharepati, is some times snowbound in winter, but is still a good short trek are easy to organize because transport from Kathamndu to Sundarijal, the starting point of the trek ,is readily available and inexpensive. It takes eight days to trek from Kathamndu to Helambu and back and the language, culture and dress of the Helambu sherps are very different from those of the Solu Khumbu Sherpas.
